Jumada al-Awwal is the fifth month of the Islamic year. It is also written Jumada al-Ula. The word Jumada comes from a root meaning dry or frozen, and the name is thought to describe either parched land or the cold season when water froze.

Among the events of this month is the Battle of Mu'tah in 8 AH, fought in present-day Jordan, where the Muslim army met a far larger Byzantine force. Zayd ibn Harithah, Ja'far ibn Abi Talib and Abdullah ibn Rawahah (may Allah be pleased with them) fell one after another before Khalid ibn al-Walid led the army back safely.

There are no special observances in Jumada al-Awwal. It is a month for keeping up regular worship.
