How to convert a Gregorian date to Hijri
Select the day, month and year in the Gregorian calendar and press Convert. The result shows the Hijri day, the name of the Islamic month and the Hijri year, together with the weekday.
The converter accepts dates from the year 623 onward, so it covers everything from the first years of Islam to dates centuries ahead.
Find your Hijri date of birth
One of the most common reasons to use this page is to find a birthday in the Islamic calendar. Enter your Gregorian date of birth and you will get the Hijri date you were born on.
Bear in mind that the Islamic day starts at sunset, not at midnight. If you were born in the evening after Maghrib, your Hijri birth date is the day after the one shown. You can get it by converting the following Gregorian day.
Because the Hijri year is shorter, your Islamic birthday moves about 11 days earlier in the Gregorian calendar each year, and your age in Hijri years is slightly higher than your age in Gregorian years. Someone who is 33 by the Gregorian calendar is about 34 by the Hijri one.
Planning ahead with the Islamic calendar
Converting Gregorian dates to Hijri helps when you are planning around the Islamic year: checking which Hijri month a holiday or trip falls in, working out when a lunar year has passed for zakat, or seeing how far away Ramadan is.
Future dates are calculated in advance by the Umm al-Qura calendar. Where the month is confirmed by sighting the crescent, the real date may turn out one day later, so treat future dates as a close guide and confirm them nearer the time.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find today's Hijri date?
Press "Use today" in the converter, or open the Islamic Date Today page, which always shows the current Hijri date.
How do I find my birthday in the Islamic calendar?
Enter your Gregorian date of birth in the converter. The result is your Hijri date of birth. If you were born after sunset, use the next day.
Why is my Hijri age higher than my Gregorian age?
A Hijri year has 354 or 355 days, around 11 fewer than a Gregorian year. Over 33 Gregorian years the difference adds up to roughly one extra Hijri year.
Why does another website show a different Hijri date?
Sites use different methods. Some follow Umm al-Qura, some use the tabular calendar and some follow local moon sighting. These can differ by one day. Use the moon-sighting adjustment to match your local calendar.
