How to convert an Islamic date to Gregorian

Pick the Hijri day, month and year in the converter above and press Convert. The Gregorian date appears underneath with the day of the week, so you can see at once whether a date fell on a Friday or a Monday.

If you are reading a date from a nikah certificate, a passport, an old family record or a Saudi document, type it exactly as written. The converter checks that the day exists in that month, because Hijri months are 29 or 30 days long and the length changes from year to year.

  • Choose the day (1 to 30).
  • Choose the Islamic month, from Muharram to Dhu al-Hijjah.
  • Type the Hijri year, for example 1447.
  • Press Convert and read the Gregorian date and weekday.

Which calendar does this converter use?

Results follow the Umm al-Qura calendar, the official calendar of Saudi Arabia. It is the calendar used on Saudi government papers, iqamas, visas and most printed Hijri calendars, which makes it the safest choice when you need a date that matches official documents.

For years far in the past or the future, outside the range that Umm al-Qura covers, the converter switches to the tabular Islamic calendar. That is the arithmetic system historians use, where months alternate between 30 and 29 days on a fixed 30-year cycle.

Why your local date can be one day different

In many countries the Islamic month does not start until the new crescent has actually been seen. Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Morocco and others rely on local sighting, so their month often begins a day after Saudi Arabia.

That is why the converter has a moon-sighting adjustment. If your local calendar is running one day behind Umm al-Qura, choose +1 day and the result will match the date observed in your country. For religious occasions such as the start of Ramadan or Eid, always go by the announcement of your local moon-sighting committee.

What people use Hijri to Gregorian conversion for

Most visitors arrive with a practical job to finish. A date of birth recorded in Hijri has to go onto a form that only accepts Gregorian dates. An employer needs the Gregorian expiry date of an iqama. A family wants to know which day of the week a wedding took place decades ago, or the Gregorian date of a relative's passing so the anniversary can be marked.

Students and researchers use it as well, to place events from Islamic history on the Gregorian timeline. Whatever the reason, the method is the same: enter the Hijri date, read off the Gregorian one.

A quick way to estimate without a converter

The Islamic year is about 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year, so the two calendars drift apart steadily. For a rough Gregorian year, multiply the Hijri year by 0.97 and add 622. For 1447 AH that gives about 2025, which is correct: 1447 AH began in June 2025.

The estimate only tells you the year. For the exact day you need a proper conversion, which is what the tool on this page does.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert an Islamic date to a Gregorian date?

Enter the Hijri day, month and year in the converter and press Convert. The matching Gregorian date and weekday are shown immediately.

Is the Islamic calendar the same as the Hijri calendar?

Yes. The Islamic calendar is called the Hijri calendar because it counts years from the Hijrah, the migration of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) from Makkah to Madinah in 622 CE.

How accurate is this converter?

It matches the Umm al-Qura calendar used officially in Saudi Arabia. Countries that rely on local moon sighting can be one day ahead or behind, and you can correct for that with the moon-sighting adjustment.

What does AH mean?

AH stands for Anno Hegirae, Latin for "in the year of the Hijrah". It marks years in the Islamic calendar in the same way CE or AD marks years in the Gregorian calendar.

Can a Hijri month have 31 days?

No. A Hijri month follows the moon and is always either 29 or 30 days long.

Is this tool free?
