Safar is the second month of the Islamic year. The name is usually explained as "empty", said to refer to homes left empty when the Arabs set out to travel or fight once the sacred month of Muharram had ended.
Before Islam many Arabs considered Safar an unlucky month. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) rejected this belief outright, saying that there is no bad omen in Safar. In Islam no month, day or date carries bad luck, and weddings, journeys and business may go ahead in Safar as in any other month.
There are no acts of worship specific to Safar. The regular recommended fasts, such as Mondays and Thursdays and the three middle days of the lunar month, apply as usual.
