Rajab is the seventh month of the Islamic year and one of the four sacred months. Its name comes from a word meaning to honour or hold in awe. It is the only sacred month that stands apart from the other three.
Many Muslims commemorate the Isra and Mi'raj on the 27th of Rajab. This is the night journey in which the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was taken from Makkah to Jerusalem and then through the heavens, and during which the five daily prayers were made obligatory. The event is established in the Quran and hadith, although its exact date is not known with certainty.
Rajab also signals that Ramadan is two months away. People begin to prepare by fasting more often, reading more Quran and settling any fasts still owed from the previous year.
